If I have sealed tubing subjected to its maximum pressure rating, where would it fail and why?

Hint: Pressure Vessels

image

Assuming this is a thin-walled pressure vessel, there are two stresses that the system is subject to:

  1. Hoop Stress
  2. Longitudinal Stress

The hoop stress is trying to pull the cylinder apart radially, and the longitudinal stress is trying to pull it apart axially. The hoop stress is twice that of the longitudinal stress. As such, the pressure vessel will crack longitudinally along the length of the pressure vessel.
